PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
The number of Syrian refugees officially registered with UNHCR is currently over 616,000; however, the actual number of Syrian refugees living in Jordan is estimated at well over 1 Million. The majority of Syrian refugees are living in host communities, predominantly in northern Jordan. The majority of Syrian refugees living in camps are based in Zaatari refugee camp which serves approximately 83,000 refugees. Azraq camp which officially opened in April 2014 reached a population of 36,800 present residents in December 2016.
Syrian families who have been displaced have had their lives, daily routines and social structures substantially disrupted in many ways. They have often witnessed extreme violence and related disturbing events, and many are now far from their relatives, friends and neighbors. Stress, fear and anxiety among children and parents can contribute to domestic violence, abuse and neglect, especially for women and children.
Mercy Corps has secured funding to continue the “Advancing Children and Adolescents Program” in Za’atari and Azraq camps. Mercy Corps has established Child and Adolescent Friendly Spaces (CFS/AFSs) in both camps, these spaces are crucial to provide opportunities for kids to play, learn, and receive social support creating safe and protective environment. In 2018, Mercy Corps will focus on community outreach and reaching the most vulnerable children and families. The Program will allocate significant resources to staff and volunteers working directly with beneficiaries while building their capacity to ensure that they are maximizing impact during the time they spend in our facilities.
